Strata of Umbria
A central block of overlapping relief bands, where chalky whites and ashes turn light into structure, between fine shadow and mineral grain.
Curatorial text
At the centre of the canvas, an architecture of horizontal strips is concentrated, seemingly suspended over an ash field, discreetly framed by a perimeter line. The bands, cut and torn, are stacked with a regular cadence yet never mechanical: each edge undulates, breaks and shifts slightly, introducing an organic breathing within a serene order. The composition, slightly off-centre, leaves broad margins that act as silence and measure.
The palette operates within a restrained register of off-whites, chalky greys and very pale ochres. Upon this base, small constellations of dark and golden dots spatter the surface, like deposits that have settled over time. The glazes leave drips and soft clouds, with areas where the paint opens into transparencies and others where it thickens like a fine crust.
The profile confirms the construction by flaps: each stratum separates by millimetres from the plane, casting a continuous shadow beneath its lip. That shadow, more than an effect, is a compositional component that draws the rhythm. The texture of the corrugated cardboard rises through the layers, turning the work into a threshold between wall and landscape, between painting and object.
