Giorgio Pagliari (Rome, 1933 – Ibiza, 2015) was an Italian painter who spent most of his artistic career in Ibiza. After training in Rome and Paris during the 1950s, he traveled to Spain in 1959 and, drawn by the island's cultural atmosphere, settled permanently in Ibiza in 1960, becoming part of the scene of resident and international artists who shaped the local avant-garde in the 1960s.

He began exhibiting on the island very early: in 1961, he held his first solo exhibition at the historic Ivan Spence Gallery (Dalt Vila). During the 1960s, he regularly showed his work in key venues such as the Carl van der Voort Gallery and El Corsario, and in 1965, he exhibited on the Spanish mainland with shows at René Metrás (Barcelona) and Juana Mordó (Madrid). In that same decade, she also participated in international group exhibitions that took her work to cities in Germany and the United States, solidifying her connection to the international reach of the Ibiza art scene and establishing her name within the island's abstract art circuit.

Her artistic language is characterized by a serene, tactile, and material abstraction, with a personal balance between the geometric and the organic. She worked with mixed media (oil and acrylic on canvas), incorporating cardboard, paper, and other adhered elements in a collage-like fashion, constructing relief surfaces through folds, flaps, adhesions, and superimposed layers. This patient, layered construction methodology generates a subtle materiality, with variations in light and volume that invite contemplation. Added to this is a restrained palette—whites, ochres, grays, and earth tones—that enhances an atmosphere of calm and an “architectural” reading of the painting, while also suggesting echoes of the Mediterranean landscape: horizons, undulations, repetitive rhythms, and a memory of the sea filtered through an abstract language.

Although his career began with great promise, Pagliari avoided the spotlight and commercial exposure, and over time reduced his exhibition presence, maintaining a quieter creative life. Even so, in 1977 he was included in the landmark exhibition “Seven Paths of Abstraction” at the Museu d’Art Contemporani d’Eivissa (MACE), which brought together key figures of abstraction residing on the island. In the 1990s, he resumed exhibiting with a show at Sa Nostra (1994), his participation in “Abstraccions” (1996), and the exhibition “Organic Triptychs” at the Libro Azul gallery (1999), where he presented works that demonstrated an evolution toward more organic forms and an increasingly refined synthesis.

He lived for over half a century in Ibiza, where he started his family (he was married to the Finnish artist Lilli Kosola, and they had a daughter, Suska Pagliari) and continued working discreetly in his studio. After his death in 2015, his work has been the subject of tributes and retrospectives on the island—such as “In Memoriam” (2016) at Can Botino and subsequent exhibitions at Garden Art Gallery (2018 and 2022)—which have contributed to rediscovering and revaluing his legacy within the history of contemporary Ibizan art, highlighting the coherence and singularity of a body of work built on sensitivity and rigor.
